I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot recently. Many business owners who I’ve come across at networking events are afraid to let go. They’re afraid to hand over the responsibility to someone else. But in actual fact, outsourcing certain tasks has so many benefits.
Outsourcing allows you to choose an expert in that field. The jobs you don’t enjoy or aren’t necessarily good at will be done better by someone who has the experience and knowledge that you don’t have. I’ve been working with a VA for a few years now. I can delegate tasks to her team which I know would probably take me ages and she’ll have it done before I’ve even got my head around it. That’s because she’s a VA, I’m not, I’m a bookkeeper so my specialist subject is anything finance related.
Learning to delegate means you can concentrate on what you’re good at. Your time will be much more productive doing the jobs you love. I know many business owners find their bookkeeping overwhelming and it often gets pushed to one side. That’s because it’s not your area of expertise and you’d much rather be getting on with generating income for your business.
I absolutely love working with businesses and their numbers. Not just the reconciling of accounts and doing what needs to be done for HMRC but really getting to know the business and what the numbers mean to them. There’s nothing more meaningful to me than helping a business navigate challenging times, being on their journey with them and not just seeing them through the otherside but seeing them thrive and succeed because they’ve had the support they needed.
If you really want your business to succeed and you want to see the full potential it really has then you have to learn to delegate. It’s not easy at first to trust someone with the responsibility of your accounts, but when you find the right person it will all fall into place. It will free up time for you to concentrate on the areas of your business that need you most and maybe give you some freedom back too.
We often work ourselves into the ground with our passion, commitment and dedication but if we reach burnout we’re no use to anyone. We need to surround ourselves with positive people who will give us the support when we need it most.
I’d be lost without the support of my VA. My business would not be where it is now if I hadn’t chosen to delegate tasks. If I’d have carried on doing everything myself, I would still be in the same position I was 2 years ago.
